Massachusetts is home turf for us. Our shop sits on Mount Auburn Street in Watertown, just west of Cambridge, and most weeks the same trucks that load a Beacon Hill brownstone in the morning are unloading a baby grand in Worcester by afternoon. Paul Marchetti started Mt Auburn Piano Movers in 2009 after years as a piano technician, and the crews he trained work on one thing only. They know that a Steinway B coming down a Back Bay switchback staircase is a different problem than a console going up a Somerville triple-decker, and they plan each carry around the instrument rather than the floor plan.
Greater Boston is the densest part of our calendar, and it is where piano moving earns its keep. Narrow winding stairwells in the South End, no-elevator walk-ups in Cambridge and Allston, big center-entrance colonials with back stairs in Newton, Brookline, and Belmont, and tight cobblestone access in the North End all ask for the skid board, the grand carriage, and sometimes a crane through an upper-floor window. We move conservatory and concert grands for the New England Conservatory, Berklee, Longy, and the Boston Conservatory, sanctuary grands and pipe organs for churches across the region, and family uprights and estate pianos out to the South Shore, the Cape, the MetroWest towns, Worcester, and Springfield on I-90 and I-91. A local upright runs $220 to $400 and a grand $580 to $980, flat per piano; stairs add about $40 to $75 a flight, and a crane lift runs $650 to $1,800 when there is no stair path. Every job carries $1M in cargo coverage, and our climate-controlled room holds a piano between closings at $60 to $130 a month.
